African Heritage in the Bahian World – A Crown of Freedom
The “African Heritage in the Bahian World – A Crown of Freedom” exhibition, held between August 14 and November 14, 2008 at the Museu Carlos Costa Pinto, provides a sampling of Brazil’s vast African heritage through the retrieval of visual identity in the form of jewelry and garments worn by the matriarchs of the traditional African religion Candomblé and their present-day influences, contrasting traditional African religions, accessories and garments with modernity in the accessories and fashions frequently worn today.
Sponsored by the State of Bahia through the State of Bahia Department of Culture’s Endowment for the Arts, this exhibition is curated by museum scientist and historian Solange Godoy. The collection on display is divided into three parts: Sovereignty and Magic; Legacy and Style; Heritage and Memory.
These areas include garments and jewelry from some of the temples that practice traditional African religions in the city of Salvador, Bahia, such as Casa Branca, Terreiro do Gantois, Ilê Axé Opô Afonjá, Terreiro do Bogum, Pilão de Prata and Terreiro São Jorge Filho da Goméia. There are also 2 mannequins wearing garments from the Fundação Instituto Feminino da Bahia’s Museu do Traje e do Têxtil, which illustrate the day-to-day and festive dress of Bahian Creole women in the 19th century (black people born in Brazil were known as Creoles at that time, to distinguish them from black people born in Africa). Jewelry and fashion designers such as Annete Sorim, Soudam, Roney George, Márcia Ganem, Chico da Prata, Lúcia Lima and Mônica Anjos are also featured in this exhibition.
Visitors will also be able to enjoy related films, and take part in lectures and workshops at the museum’s auditorium and art studios around the city.
