Brazil was born under the sign of
the Cross and Catholicism. Every saint in this collection reflects
the faith and strength of the colonizers' official religion. The
Museum's 43 sacred statues are made from polychromed wood and ivory,
and date from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. They depict
a wide range of religious figures, particularly the Crucified Christ
and the Virgin Mary, and were made in Portugal, Goa, Bahia and Spain.
