This magical substance, splendor in the glass, delights
the eye with its brilliance and transparency.
Most of the 216 crystal pieces in the Museu Carlos
Costa Pinto collection date from the nineteenth century and were
made in France by Baccarat, one of the most important brands of
crystal in the world: a symbol of perfection.
Most of the pieces were used for illumination (appliqués,
chandeliers, candelabra, candlesticks and lamps) or as lighting
accessories (domes, globes and sleeves). White or transparent, they
were especially designed to reflect and refract flickering candle
flames in magical colors. The other items in this collection include
tableware such as cups, compotes, carafes, wine glasses, and covered
cheese dishes, as well as domes for statues of saints, paperweights
and a variety of vases.
